Poachers Sentenced

WTN-L World Tibet Network News. Published by The Canada Tibet Committee. Compiled by Nima Dorjee. ISSUE ID: 99/03/03; March 3, 1999.

Guangming Daily, Qinghai, by Liu Peng

Feb. 6 -- Recently, the Medium Court of Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province, has sentenced two poachers, Linhu Ye and Wanming Tan, to 8 and 4 years' imprisonment, and fined them 10,000 yuan and 8,000 yuan respectively. In May of 1996 Ye and Tan, leading a group of poachers with two Beijing jeeps and a Dongfeng car, killed 170 Tibetan antelope in Arjin Nature Reserve and sold 120 skins for 30,000 yuan.

Another court in Xining, capital city of Qinghai Province, has sentenced another two poachers, Haimai Han and Xuejun Ma, to 7 and 6 years' imprisonment respectively, and confiscated two cars they purchased by selling antelope skins. Han and Ma killed 110 antelope in Kekexili Nature Reserve and sold 200 antelope skins.

Last November, the Procuratorate of Qinghai Province issued an order to "take stronger measures against the illegal poaching of Tibetan antelope." The two verdicts are the first since the order was issued.
