Tour Guides in Tibet to Be Sorted out by Exams

[WTN-L World Tibet Network News. Published by The Canada Tibet Committee. Issue ID: 01/12/31; December 31, 2001.]

Tourists and mountaineers alike from both home and abroad can rest content with their tour guides when they come to visit Tibet in 2002. The satisfaction comes in part from a nationwide examination on tour guides. A total of 185 tour guides from the autonomous region will take part in the exam that takes two weeks to complete.

Of the local exam takers, 73 will aim at getting the diploma for tour guiding in the Chinese language while 112 will aim at getting diplomas for tour guiding in the English and other foreign languages. Apart from the language ability, the tour guides will also be tested on such subjects as local history, culture, folklore and religion before they can finally pass and get their diplomas for the service in the trade. Some tourists and mountaineers have complained about the services provided by the local tour guides due to their language ability and knowledge about the locality. -Xinhuanet
