China: President Inspects Broadcasting in Tibet, Xinjiang

The completion of the first two phases of the "Tibet-Xinjiang project" has greatly enhanced radio and TV coverage in western areas of China, Xinhua news agency has reported. During an inspection tour of the project, Chinese President Jiang Zemin emphasized its importance in promoting economic development, social progress, national unity and social stability in the region. He praised those who had contributed to the success of the project, which meant the "goal of transmitting the voice of the party and the state to millions of households has been attained". Beijing, 1 February: When inspecting the construction of the "Tibet-Xinjiang project" on 1 February, Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party [CCP] Central Committee, state president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized: Increasing the radio and television broadcasting coverage in Tibet, Xinjiang and other remote areas has a very important significance in promoting the economic development, social progress, national unity and social stability of these areas. Unremitting efforts should be made in the radio and television broadcasting coverage in the western region and achievements should be consolidated, so that the voice of the party and the state can be transmitted further to millions of households and the voice of China can be transmitted to all over the world.
Li Lanqing, Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CCP Central Committee and vice-premier of the State Council and Ding Guangen, member of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of the CCP Central Committee, accompanied Jiang Zemin during the inspection.
This afternoon, Jiang Zemin visited the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television to hear a work report by Xu Guangchun, deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the party Central Committee and director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television [SARFT], watched a big-screen demonstration of the project to expand radio and television broadcasting coverage in the western region, toured the monitoring centre and met with representatives of engineering and technical personnel.
Jiang Zemin pointed out: Comrades of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and all radio, film and television departments throughout the country have earnestly implemented central arrangements and, with the support of relevant departments and local party committees and governments, have worked out plans and carried out construction meticulously, overcome numerous difficulties and successfully implemented the large-scale radio and television broadcasting coverage project in Tibet, Xinjiang and other remote areas. Thanks to the efforts in the past year and more, these areas have seen a fundamental change in their radio and television broadcasting coverage and the goal of transmitting the voice of the party and the state to millions of households has been attained. On behalf of the party Central Committee and the State Council, he expressed cordial regards and heartfelt gratitude to comrades of all the radio, film and television departments throughout the country.
Jiang Zemin pointed out: The project to expand the radio and television broadcasting coverage in Tibet, Xinjiang and other remote areas is a project conforming to the aspirations of the people, winning their support and warming and stabilizing their feelings and one welcomed by the large numbers of local residents and especially people of minority nationalities. Successful implementation of this project fully proves that socialism has the superiority of mustering efforts to carry out large projects and that as long as we emphasize political consciousness, pay attention to implementation and proceed from people's interests in doing everything, we will win good results in our work and the support of the people.
Jiang Zemin emphasized: In the new situation, it is necessary to attach great importance to radio, film and television work and make the best of radio, film, television and other modern means of media to carry out ideological and political work and propaganda and education. In line with the development of the situation, we should intensify reform, actively bring forth new ideas, strive to increase the influence of radio, film and television by improving the ideological content, the ways of expression and the methods for publicity and use more and better radio, film and television works to unite the people, encourage them to work hard and promote reform, opening up and the modernization drive.
Comrade Jiang Zemin gave an important instruction on increasing radio and television broadcasting coverage in Tibet, Xinjiang and other remote provinces on 16 September 2000 and the "Tibet-Xinjiang project" started in line with central arrangements. The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television as well as radio, film and television departments at all levels have regarded this project as a major task. With the support of local party committees and governments and relevant central departments, they have invested a large amount of money to newly build or expand a large number of transmission stations. The first-and second-phase construction of the "Tibet-Xinjiang project" has completed, thus greatly enhancing the radio and television broadcasting coverage in the provinces and autonomous regions in western China.
