[WTN-L World Tibet Network News. Published by The Canada Tibet Committee. Issue ID: 00/11/17; November 17, 2000.]

People's Daily, Sunday, November 16, 2000

A trunk fibre-optic communication cable linking Shigatse Prefecture with Ali Prefecture in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region was recently completed and passed an initial test.

The 1000-km-long cable is located in an area 4,500 meters above sea level on average and involved an investment totaling 120 million yuan.

With the completion of the project, Lhasa, capital of Tibet, is linked with Tibet's six prefectures, greatly boosting the economic and social development of the Region.
