Tibet to Improve Rural School Conditions

[WTN-L World Tibet Network News. Published by The Canada Tibet Committee. Issue ID: 03/05/04; May 4, 2003.]

Tibetan children in rural parts will soon be sitting in new classrooms.

China's Tibet Autonomous Region will invest some 150 million yuan, or about 18 million US dollars to improve rural primary school conditions and teaching standards.

The project involves over 300 schools in 57 counties in the region and the money will mostly be used to reconstruct the rundown buildings.

In addition, the regional government also plans to set up an education program for those students too far from a public school. That could mean home schooling, virtual teaching through the Internet or satellite schools.
