The southwest provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan, and the Tibet Autonomous Region are to jointly invest 80 billion yuan (HK$75.42 billion) to develop the Shangri-La ecological tourism region.

The Securities Times quoted Cui Zhiwei, deputy head of Sichuan provincial tourism bureau, as saying the huge project would be funded by local governments, local enterprises and overseas investors. On May 5, Zhongdian county in Yunnan was officially renamed Shangri-La county for its striking similarity to the place of eternal peace described by James Hilton in his novel Lost Horizon in 1933. The Shangri-La ecological region would include nine prefectures and cities located in the southwest area of Sichuan, northwest area of Yunnan, and southeast area of Tibet, Cui said.

To speed up the project, the three provinces have set up a team to oversee the development consisting of provincial government officials in development planning, environment protection, tourism, transportation and communication, science and technology. The team would soon submit its proposal on the Sichuan-Yunnan-Tibet Shangri-La tourism region to the State Council for approval, Cui added.

The governments of Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet also planned to promote the Shangri-La ecological tourism region to both domestic and overseas tourists at the China International Tourism Festival to be held in Shanghai in November.
